A Strong Storm Keeps Potsdam Firefighters Busy

On 8/18/2015, the Potsdam Fire Department were activated for numerous service calls and alarm activations due to a serve storm. 16:30 (4:00pm)- Potsdam Fire reported to respond to the Lawrence Ave for a report of smoke coming from the power substation. At this time power to half of the village was lost. 17:21 (5:21pm)- Alarm Activation at Timmerman Hall, SUNY Potsdam. 17:22 (5:22pm)- Alarm Activation at TJ Toyota, 6706 State Highway 56. 19:59 (7:59pm)- Potsdam Fire and Rescue dispatched to respond to 200 Outer Main Street for a report of a roof which had blown off an apartment complex. No one was injured at this location. 20:07 (8:07pm)- Alarm Activation at Clarkson Hall. 20:08 (8:08pm)- Report of a tree blocking the roadway on the Potsdam-Parishville Road out of the village. 20:18 (8:18pm)- Potsdam Fire requested to respond to 177 Elm Street for a report of a power line down and gas explosion. Caller reports hearing someone yelling for help. Upon arrival firefighters found a primary power line to be on the ground causing the grass to catch fire. Caller was worried the power line may have caused problems with the gas line. St. Lawrence Gas was requested to the scene. No gas problems were founded at this time. All residents around the area were checked finding no one to be injured. 20:19 (8:19pm)- Potsdam Fire requested to respond to 186 Elm Street for a report of a tree on power lines. 20:20 (8:20pm)- Report of a tree blocking the roadway at 8 Morningside Drive in the village. 20:21 (8:21pm)- Potsdam Fire requested to assist Potsdam Police for traffic control at the intersection of Park & Elm Street, and at the intersection of Main & Park Street. 20:22 (8:22pm)- Potsdam Fire requested to respond to the Potsdam Municipal Airport for a report of a plane which was tipped on its side and leaking a small amount of fuel. Upon arrival firefighters contained the leak and were able to fix the fuel line which was broke to stop the fuel from spilling on the pad. The members of the Potsdam Fire Department would like to thank West Potsdam Fire Department for their help in answering calls!
