On May 23, 2018, at approximately 7:34PM, Potsdam Fire and Potsdam Rescue were dispatched to the intersection of Lawrence Ave and Missouri Ave, in the village, for a report of a pedestrian who was struck by a tractor-trailer. Engine 49 and Rescue 14 responded at the time of the page with a full crew.
Upon arrival, members found an eight-year-old boy who was struck by a tractor-trailer while crossing the crosswalk on his bike. The boy had obvious trauma to the face and chest areas. Potsdam Police Officer Fink and Fire Chief Danielle Rose began patient care until Potsdam Rescue arrived on the scene.
The little boy was transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital by Potsdam Rescue and later airlifted to University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington.

On June 12, 2018 the members of the Potsdam Fire Department met the little boy to present him with a brand new bike, helmet, some LED lights for his bike and a new bike lock. "Purchasing those items out of my own pocket for that little boy, was the least I could do for him for all he has gone through these last couple of weeks. Any call we respond to always affects us in some way. When children are involved it weighs on our hearts just a little more as many of our members have small children of their own" Chief Rose stated.

On a Facebook post, the mother of the little boy wrote: "A few weeks ago, we experienced a traumatic event —Jackson was hit by a vehicle while riding his bike. I don’t want to relive the details, but I do want to acknowledge and celebrate Fire Chief Danielle Rose, and the entire Potsdam Fire Department for their tremendously thoughtful, kind, and generous acts; they bought Jackson a super cool new bike, matching helmet, bike lock and fun LED lights to decorate the wheels! The crew made a surprise delivery of the gifts to Jackson at the school, after baseball practice this evening, then drove the boys and bike home in the fire truck!!! Jackson got right on his new bike without hesitation, taking his first ride since the accident! We are beyond touched by this incredibly moving gesture.
