The Potsdam Police Department alerted the Fire Department at 2154 hours to a possible chimney fire at 145 Elm Street. Engine 49, chauffered by Fire Driver Robert Crowe, was enroute at 2155 hours and arrived on scene two minutes later. The homeowners advised that their chimney was emitting an unusually large amount of smoke and that the smoke was blowing back into their house at the woodstove in the basement. Firefighters laddered the roof and found the chimney to be plugged with creosote. The fire had largely burned itself out. Burning embers were removed along with the chimney cap. The building was checked for any extension and all units returned to service at 2317 hours.
