St. Lawrence County Central Dispatch actived the tones at 1750 hours for a mutual aid call, Tanker Task Force activation, for a barn fire in Canton. The barn on the Old DeKalb Road, was in the center of a large farm complex. Engine 48, Tanker 100 and Rescue 14 all responded. The original assignment was for a fill-in by Engine 48 and Rescue 14, however due to the size of the fire both units were moved up to the scene. Engine 48 set up in front of the United Helpers Nursing Home on West Main Street to fill tankers. Rescue 14 proceeded directly to the scene with its personnel and Tanker 100 entered the tanker shuttle.
