The members of the Potsdam Fire Department would like to once again remind residences that the springtime brush burning ban is in effect from March 15th, 2014 until May 14, 2014. This means that outdoor burning of brush, grass or debris is prohibited in New York State during this time.

State officials announced that there have been 35% fewer brush fires in New York since the annual springtime ban first was enforced in 2010.

Penalties under the burn ban include a minimum $500 fine and possible criminal charges for a first offense.

Exceptions to the ban include barbecue grills, maple sugar arches and similar outdoor cooking devices when actually used for cooking or processing food; small fires used for cooking and campfires, provided that only charcoal or untreated wood is used as fuel and the fire is not left unattended; burning of agricultural wastes on 5 acres or more actively devoted to agricultural or horticultural use; and using liquid petroleum-fueled smudge pots to prevent frost damage to crops.

For more information and a compete listing of the open burning regulations in New York State go to http://www.dec.ny.gov/regs/4261.html

Town of Potsdam residents are reminded that they are required to get a burning permit to have an open fire in the town and Village resident should note that open burning is prohibited year round within the Village limits.
