Structure Fire on South Canton Road

On September 23, at 1305 hours Potsdam Fire, Potsdam Rescue, and County Car 7 were dispatched to a report of a possible structure fire with fire/smoke coming out of a bedroom window at 107 South Canton Road. Engine 80 (J. Corbett) responded at 1306 hours and Tanker 100 (R. Robar) shortly after. Engine 80 arrived on scene at 1314 hourscalled on scene and confirmed a working fire on the second floor. Engine 48 (J. Keleher) responded to a hydrant on Clarkson Ave. to fill tankers. Engine 80 then requested Hannawa Falls Fire and West Potsdam Fire to the scene and Canton Fire on standby at their station. A 2nd alarm for airpacks was requested at 1320 hours. Rescue 14 (McLennan) arrived on scene with a full crew. Past Chief Chris Taylor then assumed Incident Command and requested at 1322 tanker, air packs, and manpower from Canton Fire. West Stockholm was requested to standby at Potsdam station with pumper, tanker, and manpower. A 1 3/4" line was stretched up to the room room of origin. The crew was able to quickly knock the fire down. Two 24 foot ground ladders were placed to the windows of the second story. Crews from Potsdam, Canton and West Potsdam checked for extension and began salvage and overhaul. The thermal imaging camera was used to look for any hidden hot spots. Exhaust fans were used to ventilate the house. County Cars 18, 20, and 30 responded to the scene for the cause and origin investigation. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Code enforcement responded to the scene and condemned the house. Potsdam Fire was back in service at 1749 hours.
