Busy Monday for Potsdam Fire

October 20th tuned out to be a busy day for Potsdam Fire. At 1601 3rd Assistant Chief Tim Jerome advised dispatch he was on scene of 2 vehicle property damage accident State Highway 56 at the intersection with the Sissonville road. Chief Jerome requested fire be dispatched for traffic control . Rescue 30 (Perry) responded and arrived on scene at 1614. R-30 positioned at the Pleasant Valley Road and SH 56 to slow down traffic. Additional members assisted with moving traffic safely through the scene. Potsdam Rescue and the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office were also on scene.

Then at 1657 hours, St. Lawrence County Central Dispatch dispatched Potsdam Fire, Potsdam Rescue, and County Car 36 to a report of a Townhouse on fire near the Science Center at Clarkson University. Engine 49 (Lozipone), Tower 5 (M. Bradish), Rescue 14 (McLennan), and Rescue 30 (Perry) responded. 2nd Assistant Chief Danielle Rose (36-3) arrived on scene, established Command, and reported nothing showing. Apparatus arrived on scene at 1704 hours and further investigation found that the caller thought that the laundry room exhaust was heavy smoke and called to report a fire.

At 1734 hours, Potsdam Fire was dispatched to a report of smoke coming from the basement at 58 Elm Street. Engine 49 (Lozipone), Tower 5 (M. Bradish), Rescue 14 (McLennan), and Rescue 30 (Callahan) responded. All units arrived on scene at the time of alarm with what appeared to be moderate to light smoke showing. Chief Justin Perry established Command and, after investigation, it was determined that the "smoke" that was reported was actually steam from the boiler. All units were back in service from this call at 1748 hours.

Monthly training at 1800 hours with an Akron nozzle demonstration and hose line training at the Market Square Mall. During training, at 1840 hours, Potsdam Fire was dispatched to a Fire Alarm activation at Hamlin-Powers Dorm on the Clarkson University Hill Campus. Engine 49 (Lozipone) and Tower 5 (David McGregor) responded and arrived on scene at 1843 hours. Members investigated and then reset the alarm.

To top off the day, at 2247 hours Potsdam Fire was dispatched to a fire alarm activation at SUNY Potsdam Maxcy Hall. Engine 49 (Fenton) responded and arrived on scene at 2251 hours followed by Rescue 14 (Andrus). Members investigated and determined the cause to be steam from the showers in the locker room. Potsdam Fire returned to service at 2307 hours.
