Working Structure Fire On The River Road

On Tuesday December 30th, Norwood Fire, Potsdam Rescue, and County Car 16 were toned out at 1900 hours to a working structure fire at 587 River Road . 36-11 (Lt. Josh McGregor) reported on scene within three minutes, reporting flames showing from A,B, and C sides. Potsdam Fire was requested by Norwood 30-1 at 1903 hours. At 1908 hours Engine 80 (J. Keleher) was enroute with a crew, followed shortly after by Tanker 100 (R. Robar), and Rescue 14 (J. Farnsworth) with units arriving on scene at 1915 hours. Engine 48 (M. Bradish) went to the dry hydrant at the bridge in Hewittville , and, in conjunction with Engine 80, laid 1400 feet of 4 inch LDH for water supply. Engine 80 served as the attack engine and two 2 1/2" lines were stretched off along with two 1 3/4" lines. Firefighters operated from a defensive position, as flames were blowing out all four sides of the house and the compromised structural integrity caused by the fire. Norfolk Fire and Madrid Fire responded to the scene with additional tankers. West Stockholm was relocated to Potsdam Station for the cover assignment. After significant knockdown of the fire had occurred, 1st Assistant Chief David McGregor requested Tower 5 (J. Corbett) to the scene to assist in gaining access to portions of the roof that were not accessible safely otherwise. County Car 36 (B. Sullivan) responded to the scene and requested law enforcement to the scene and additional investigators with the St. Lawrence County Fire Investigation Team. County Cars 11 (C. Adams), 20 (A. Barr), 30 (J. Lacks), and 37 (T. Conklin) responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. West Potsdam Ladies Auxiliary provided food and refreshments on scene. Members spent considerable time after returning to the station to deice hose, apparatus, and equipment, wash hose, and return the trucks to service. Potsdam Fire was back in service at 0322 hours.
