On October 17, 2017 at approximately 9:46AM, the Potsdam Fire Department were dispatched to 698 South-Canton Road for a report of smoke coming from the dishwasher. At the time of the page, the caller stated that they were getting the occupants of the residence out of the structure.

Engine 80, Tanker 100, Rescue 14, and Rescue 30 were out of service to the call within a matter of minutes.

Upon arrival, Past Chief John Keleher determined the cause of the smoke from the dishwasher was in fact from a plastic drinking cup that had dropped down off the racks of the dishwasher and landed on the heating element.

The cup was removed from the dishwasher and the dishwasher was pulled away from under the counter top to make sure there was no extension of fire outside the dishwasher unit.

All units were back in service at 10:43AM.
