| Potsdam firefighters made quick work of an electrical fire that had extended into the structure at the John Hantz, Jr. residence on the Morgan Road in the Town of Potsdam. Firefighters were dispatched to a reported basement fire at 0611 hours. Chief Taylor requested West Potsdam Fire with a tanker and manpower to the scene. Assistant Chief David McGregor arrived first on the scene to find heavy smoke coming from the basement of a two story wood frame structure. All occupants had evacuated. Chief Taylor arrived on the scene and transmitted a working fire in the basement to all responding units. Engine 80 being chauferred by Past Chief James Mason arrived on the scene and its crew stretched an 1 3/4" handline to the basement and began ventilation of the structure. West Potsdam Past Chief and Potsdam Fire Driver Robert Pierce riding on Engine 80 entered the structure with a 20 lb. dry chemical extinguisher and knocked down the fire in the area of the electrical panel. Firefighters were unable to completely extinguish the electrical fire until officials from Niagara Mohawk arrived and cut power to the residence. Firefighters utilized the Scott Eagle 160 thermal imaging camera to locate a fire in a void space behind the electrical panel. The fire in the void space was contained with 2 1/2 gallon water/foam extinguisher after the power had been disconnected. No injuries were reported. Firefighters returned to service at 0758 hours. |
