Fertilizer Truck Rollover on US Highway 11

On Monday April 20th, 2020, at 1623 hours, Potsdam Fire, Potsdam Rescue, and County Car 10 were dispatched to respond in the vicinity of 6965 US Highway 11 for a reported tractor trailer rollover with entrapment. At 1626 hours, Engine 49 (J. Robar) responded. At 1627 hours, 36-1 (T. Jerome) responded who then was updated by Central Dispatch that it was a fertilizer truck that rolled over with the operator entrapped. 36-2 (M. Bradish) and 36-3 (Dan McGregor) responded and requested that US Highway 11 be shut down from Morgan Road to County Route 35. West Potsdam Fire was requested to respond to shut traffic down. At 1634 hours, Engine 49 arrived on scene followed shortly by Rescue 30 (S. Corbett).

Medical from Potsdam Rescue began to give patient care to the operator and firefighters began to work with medical and personnel on scene on a way to extricate the victim out. 36-2 requested for Lifenet to be put on standby who accepted and was awaiting at Potsdam Airport. At 1643 hours, County Car 1 (M. Denner) arrived on scene to assist with operations. At 1641 hours, Canton Fire was dispatched to respond Rescue 1 with rope rescue equipment to assist with getting the patient up the embankment. Rescue 1 responded shortly after being dispatched. Firefighters used airbags and a reciprocating saw to assist with extricating the victim out of the machinery.

When the farm equipment rolled it spilled fertilizer on the road and on the side of the embankment. DEC Spill Response was contacted and responded to the scene for assessment. At 1707 hours, Incident Command advised Central Dispatch that Lifenet can stand down.

The victim was extricated out of the vehicle around 40 minutes from the time of call and was transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital by Potsdam Rescue. The injuries to the victim are unknown. The scene was investigated by the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office and New York State Police.

Firefighters assisted in cleaning the fertilizer off of the roadway with leaf blowers. New York State Department of Transportation assisted on scene with removing guard rails. Route 11 Trucking responded and removed the farm equipment from the embankment. At 1940 hours, US Highway 11 was opened back up. At 1945 hours, Potsdam Fire was in service.
