On September 22nd, 2021, Potsdam Fire was on campus at SUNY Potsdam for a Fire Safety Fair and Mock Dorm burn. During the Fire Safety Fair, members of the Potsdam Fire Department along with the FIre Protection Specialists from the NYS Office of Fire Prevention and Control helped raise awareness of fire safety issue to the new and returning residents at SUNY Potsdam. Students were shown how to pull a fire alarm pull station if needed and how to properly use a fire extinguisher. Also during this time, members were recruiting potential new members.

The Fire Safety Day culminated with the Mock Dorm Burn 4 PM. The room was built by SUNY Potsdam staff and furnished as a typical dorm room would be. Students were given fire safety tips and a short presentation NYS Fire Protection Specialist Christopher Taylor (a member and past Fire Chief of Potsdam Fire). The mock dorm room was then lit with the fire quickly spreading, activating the smoke detector and quickly reaching high heat at ceiling level. Within minutes, the room had reached flash over stage, at which point, firefighters moved in and extinguished the flames. This annual event has proven to be an eye opener to the students, showing them how quickly a fire in a dorm room can develop into an unsurviveable situation, and reinforcing the fire safety practices that are promoted.
