By Fire Driver Mark Maroney
May 19, 2022

On Thursday, May 19th 2022 at 0448 hours, Potsdam Fire received a landline at the station from a caller reporting a possible fire at 176 Market Street, Burger King. At 0450 hours, Engine 49 (M. Maroney) responded and while enroute to the call 36-2 (M. Bradish) reported on scene with heavy black smoke with flames exiting the roof. Engine 49 arrived on scene at 0450 hours and laid large diameter hose from the closest fire hydrant to establish water supply into the parking lot of Burger King. Tower 5 (J. Keleher) responded shortly after and positioned near the parking lot side of Burger King. Engine 48 (J. Robar) responded to the hydrant to boost water supply.

On arrival, heavy smoke and flames were exiting the roof of Burger King and firefighters stretched an 1 3/4" hose line off of Engine 49 and found active fire above the ceiling tiles inside of the restaurant. Firefighters quickly extinguished flames that were active in the duct work area. The fire was found to have extended into the roof. Firefighters made access to the roof via Tower 5. 36-2 requested West Stockholm Fire and West Potsdam Fire for manpower to the scene.

Once on the roof, firefighters used K12 saws to cut into the roof to stop the extension of fire. Firefighters used a hose line from Tower 5 which was being charged with water from Engine 49 to extinguish the remaining fire. County Car 1 (M. Denner) responded to the scene along with County Car 10 (B. Pierce). Potsdam Rescue provided fire standby and the Village Code Enforcement was notified and responded to the fire scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Potsdam Fire was in service at 0732 hours.

Units: Engine 49 (M. Maroney), Engine 48 (J. Robar), Tower 5 (J. Keleher)
