National Arson Awareness Week is upon us. Arson robs communities of its valuable assets, lives and property. Our goal is to help our community reduce the occurrence of arson and reduce its devastating effect by making our residents and visitors aware of measures to safeguard their homes, buildings and property. This year's theme focuses on preventing youth firesetting behaviors.

Youth firesetting is a problem throughout the United States and around the world. Unfortunately, the North Country and the Potsdam Community are not immune to this potential deadly activity.

Fire misuse behaviors in children may be attributed to issues such as curiosity or experimentation, underlying struggles with impulse control, emotional regulation, social/interpersonal skills, childhood trauma or other behavioral health conditions. Children observe adults using matches and lighters but may not be taught about important fire safety practices. They may also observe unsafe uses of fire in media, videos, and gaming.

Visit the links below to learn about current best practices and tips to prevent and mitigate youth firesetting in communities across the country.

If you or someone you know needs assistance, contact the Potsdam Fire Station at 315-265-3312 for more information.
