Garbage Truck Rollover

On Wednesday, August 2nd, 2023 at 1246 hours, Potsdam Fire, Potsdam Rescue, and County Car 10 were dispatched to the vicinity of 320 Dayton Road for a reported garbage truck rollover with reported entrapment. At 1247 hours, West Potsdam Fire, Assistant Chief Mark Maroney arrived on scene and confirmed obvious entrapment with a Garbage truck on it's side. At 1251 hours, Rescue 14 (Ju. Mcgregor) responded followed by Engine 80 (B. Andrus).

On scene, firefighters worked together to get the driver of the garbage truck out of the truck. Firefighters were able to take the gasket from the windshield then remove the glass. A backboard was then used to get the occupant onto the backboard then onto a stretcher. The driver of the garbage truck was transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital with non-life threatening injuries by Potsdam Rescue. Potsdam Fire provided traffic control as the area of the Dayton Road was shutdown. Firefighters on scene used absorbent pads and speedy dry to absorb fluids that had spilled from the truck.

Route 11 Trucking responded with their wrecker to overturn the flipped garbage truck. Potsdam Town Highway was notified due to the roadway being damaged. Personnel on scene worked to clean the roadway along with members from Potsdam Town Highway. The scene is under investigation by New York State Police. Potsdam Fire was in service at 1559 hours.
