On Wednesday, September 20th, 2023, SUNY Potsdam hosted their annual Safety Day Fair. This fair provides safety tips and guidelines for their students to follow. The event began at 12 PM and ended around 4 PM with a mock dorm burn to complete the event.

SUNY Potsdam invited the Potsdam Fire Department for the mock dorm burn in conjunction with New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Office of Fire Prevention and Control. The mock dorm burn demonstrates to new and returning students the rapid progression of fire in a small mock dorm room. NYSOFPC Fire Protection Specialist and Potsdam Fire Past Chief Christopher Taylor was on hand with K9 Brew to speak with students about knowing two ways out of the their dorms and how quickly it takes for the room to be come "fully involved" in a short time.

The mock dorm was then lit where the fire quickly spread, activating the smoke detector and quickly reaching high heat at ceiling level. Within minutes, the room had reached flash over stage, at which point, firefighters moved in and extinguished the flames.

Potsdam Fire members would like to thank SUNY Potsdam for their invite to their safety day fair.
