| Potsdam firefighters were alerted by St. Lawrence County 911 Central Dispatch at approximately 1515 hours to a report of an alarm sounding at 28 Grant Street in the Village of Potsdam. Potsdam Engine 48, operated by Fire Driver Dick Fenton, arrived on the scene and reported "Smoke Showing" from the residence and struck a second alarm, upgrading the incident.
First Assistant Chief David McGregor arrived and forced entry to the residence allowing him to quickly remove the unattended pot of food on the stove. The residence was searched and no occupants were located. Chief McGregor cancelled the full response. Ventilation commenced and the residence was cleared of the heavy smoke on all three floors.
Thankfully, a properly maintained smoke alarm, an alert neighbor, and rapid fire department response prevented extensive damage to the residence. The homeowner returned and was advised of the situation. Of course, the firefighters took the opportunity to provide kitchen fire safety tips to the resident. Including the importance of keeping combustibles such as paper towels, pot holders, and dish towels away from potential sources of ignition. |
