The Potsdam Fire Department self dispatched for a reported fire in the rear cargo area of a Casella garbage truck on Friday October 10, 2025 at 12:08 PM in the parking lot of the Shopping Center at 200 Market Street. Engine 49 responded and arrived to find that the truck had already unloaded its cargo into the parking lot. The pile of recycling material was actively burning, Firefighters stretched a 1 3/4" handline and knocked the majority of the fire down. Casella employees then brought a skid steer to the scene where the material was spread apart and fully extinguished before being loaded into a dumpster and hauled away. No injuries reported, and Potsdam Fire returned to service at 2:16 PM.
