On Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at 20:08 hrs, pagers sounded for a mutual aid response to a structure fire on Chapel St. in the Village of Canton. Due to radio problems at St. Lawrence County Central Dispatch, Canton Fire's tones were put out from Potsdam Fire Station. Canton 4-3, Assistanct Chief Bob Crowe, requested Potsdam's Tower 5 and manpower to the scene. Tower 5, operated by FF James Corbett, along with Rescue 14, driven by Lt. Walt McLennan, and Engine 111, chauffeured by Past Chief Steve Keleher, were enroute at 20:15 hrs. Potsdam units arrived on scene at 20:32 hrs after a ten mile trip to Canton in freezing rain and high winds. Tower 5 was set up for ventilation and overhaul work. Potsdam firefighters entered the structure and assisted with overhaul. Rescue 14 set up lighting for the scene and filled SCBA bottles. Engine 111 was assigned to lay a 4" supply line to Tower 5 but due to a quick knockdown of the fire the hose was not stretched. All Potsdam units were back in service at 23:25 hrs.
