August 30, 2004
During the late morning hours of Wednesday, August 30, 2004 the Potsdam Fire Department responded to the Cheel Center on the Clarkson University Campus for a report of possible very high Carbon Monoxide levels. Maintenance supervisor,John Frary, requested a fire department response after noticing very high CO readings on a detector in BENE Pizzeria. As a precaution first arriving Firefighter James Corbett requested the building be evacuated. The students were very cooperative and evacuated in orderly manor. Engine 48 arrived and firefighters entered the building with the Bacharach Snifit 50 CO monitor to investigate. Firefighters checked the food court area and found CO levels to be normal. It was determined the carbon monoxide detector in BENE Pizzeria was showing false levels of CO.
Clarkson University staff was on scene and worked with well the members of the Potsdam Fire Department to determine if there was a problem. Firefighters cleared the scene and students were back in the building in time for lunch.
