Thermal Imager Put to Work

By Firefighter/EMT Robert Crowe
September 19, 2004

Our Scott Eagle 160 thermal imaging camera, purchased with funds from our 2003 Assistance to Firefighter's Grant, once again proved its usefulness this morning, assisting members in locating the source of heat in an Elm Street bed and breakfast. St. Lawrence County Central Dispatch activated the Potsdam Fire Department at 0711 hrs to respond to 48 Elm Street, The Brambles Inn and Gardens, for a reported fire.

Being close to shift change, both fire drivers were in quarters. Fire Driver Bob Crowe responded with Engine 48 along with Fire Driver Bob Pierce, who had just been relieved. Arriving on scene at 0713 hrs, Fire Driver Pierce entered the building, a two story wood-frame bed and breakfast, to investigate. He immediately notified Fire Driver Crowe that there appeared to be smoke and heat in the second floor and requested a line be stretched and the thermal imaging camera. Fire Driver Crowe requested a second alarm and began stretching supply line to the hydrant across the street. Additional personnel were arriving on scene and the hydrant was dressed and a handline stretched to the rear of the building. The thermal imaging camera was brought in and utilized to locate the source of the heat. After investigation it was determined that a pipe from the steam heating system had been cut in anticipation of extending the system into another room. The cold overnight temperatures had caused the boiler to come on, allowing steam to escape from open pipe which activated the fire alarm system. Members were able to secure the pipe and restore the fire alarm system, turning the property back over to the owner.

All Potsdam Fire Department units were placed back in service at 0749 hrs.
The Potsdam Police Department was on scene, closing Elm Street to traffic to ensure firefighter safety. The Potsdam Volunteer Rescue Squad also responded with an ambulance to stand-by.
